Maine Trip Report Part Two

Okay, so Friday I ended up going shopping instead of going to take pictures. I found the Fashion Bug out here(it’s been moved since I was last up here) and went in search of an outfit for Sherry’s wedding. I found something and a few other somethings and then ran into Sears real quick to get an adapter to play my Ipod in my mothers car cassette player before heading back to mom’s. Once there I proceeded to try and get a nail appointment forgetting about it being a holiday weekend. No dice. I did call the gym and found out that I could sign up for a week for 20 bucks so that was cool.
I ate some leftover Red Barn food and waited for mom to call to be picked up.
Picked mom up around three or so and we headed up to Walmart. I already had my outfit and mom was kind of thinking of wearing something she had at home so it was more of a grocery run. It really shocked me to see the number of spiral perms and female mullets that are still running ramped here in Augusta. I mean, it was kind of okay img_7977when I left…it was 1999. Still way out of style but it was still almost in the 90’s but in 2009?? Wow.
After Wally-world I ran into the gym to sign up for a week and then mom was hungry so we stopped at Sam’s to get some pizza. I got mine to go since I had been snacking on the leftovers that afternoon.
Once we were home we watched some TV and I had a glass of wine that I had gotten at Wal-mart(Lambrusco!) while I set mom up with a Facebook account. I showed her how to work it and retired to my bedroom to read and upload pictures. Mom was still playing around on Facebook by the time I hit the sack. I may have created a monster.
Yesterday I woke up got into my workout gear and hit the gym. I did my couch to 5k program on the treadmill. It is SOOOO much easier to run on a treadmill. Must be the shock absorption or something.
On the way home I stopped at Dunkin Donuts. We don’t have them back home and I miss their coffee badly. I was still hot from my work out so I opted for a coffee coolatta instead. Oh. My. God. I fell in love! It is sweet coffee goodness and I will surely go into withdrawals by the time I have to go home.
By the time I had got home mom had already showered so I followed in her footsteps and we got ready to go to the wedding. My cousin Rocky had facebook messaged me the night before asking if we were meeting them at her mothers house beforehand and caravanning to the wedding. She said they would be leaving around 1:15ish since the wedding was at 2. I said we would be there but if we weren’t there by 1:15 not to worry and to leave without us.
We picked up Tammy(another cousin of mine) around noon and headed to Portland. I decided to drive because…well, my mothers driving makes me nervous. It was probably the longest I have driven in a long time. Yes it was freeway, but not the kind of freeway I am normally scared of. 🙂img_7984
We got to Lee’s at 1:05 and they were all gone. Thankfully it is Maine and no one locks their doors so we were able to use Lee’s house to take a pee break. I took a picture of the clock above Auntie Tee’s fridge to show we were on time and then all three of us stole a homemade chocolate chip cookie from the Tupperware box on the counter before heading back out to Scarborough.
We found the place no problem. It was a campground on a lake. Unfortunately, it has been raining in Maine for the last two weeks and today the rain was also making an appearance. It held out right until we all sat down outside to start the wedding and then the sky opened up.
We were herded under a tarp until it has passed and then us cousins were given a scrap of towel and ordered to go wipe off the chairs while so everyone could take their seats again. Who knew I would have to work for my dinner? 😉
The timing worked out and they were able to get through the wedding with no rain. Sherry looked beautiful in her gown. Her two sons gave her away. It was all really nice.
After we all gathered under the tarp on picnic tables while the wedding party took pictures. It was here that I learned that my cousins have not changed and that you still can’t seat Denny and Tammy next to each other. No good will come of it. It was also here that I realized how much I missed family get togethers because of the very reason that my cousins hadn’t changed.

img_7998       img_7999     img_8003      img_8029

When my grandparents were alive all the family would gather for Thanksgiving and Xmas. Every year. It was a tradition and it was fun. Once Mam and Pap passed on we didn’t do the family social gathering thing much. By we I mean Mom and Shawn and I. I’m sure we were invited to other get togethers but it just kinda dwindled down to us not doing much of anything on the holidays. I don’t think I’ve hung out with my cousins all together like that for at least 13 or 14 years.
It had been far too long. I laughed so much on Saturday it was pretty amazing. I’m not sure how my mom, being as quiet as she tends to be in social situations, came into this family. If she didn’t look like a complete cross between my grandmother and my grandfather I would swear she was adopted. The rest of my family on my mothers side is just as loud and crazy as I am and I love it! 😀
At any rate, the wedding had good laughs, good food, good company and good times were had by all.

I drove us home and it started to downpour as we got closer to Augusta. We dropped Tammy off and headed home. At this point both mom and I were exhausted and sat down in front of the TV and got all giggly. I thought about having a glass of wine but realized I was so overtired I already felt like I had a buzz so I really didn’t need it. Heh!
I headed to my room, uploaded all my pictures and videos and watched an episode of LOST before reading and going to bed.
That leads us to today.
I have gone to the gym and gotten another Coffee Coolatta. That’s it. Tomorrow I hang out with Naomi and hopefully Tuesday will be Mags and Kim but Kim hasn’t gotten back to me after I left her a voicemail and Katherine hasn’t texted me back so maybe I don’t have as many people to see while I’m here as I thought. 🙂
I think I might go see Auntie Donna this afternoon and see if the Made In Maine shop is open so I can get some gifts for the kids back home.
So that is what is going on so far.

Trip to Maine Part 1

I planned my trip back home to Maine for this weekend because my cousin Sherry is getting married.  What better time to get to see all the cousins I haven’t seen in ages right?

Wednesday we packed up all my stuff in the PT and headed to work.  My flight wasn’t until later that night so I had to put in a full day of work first.  My decision to pack lightly this year was based on the fact that I’m staying at my moms and she has a washer and drier, plus I know I’m going to end up buying stuff much like last year and since I had a hard time fitting said stuff into my suitcase last time, I would just bring a few things and buy whatever I needed here.

Rob brought me to the airport after work where we had a nice dinner of prawns and twice baked potato with clam chowder and the most delicious bread.  My goal was to overstuff myself so I wouldn’t need to buy any expensive food on the plane(it worked by the way.)  After that my nerves kicked in and thanks to PMS I had a mini melt down out in the parking lot where were getting my luggage which resulted in some tears and me smoking a cigarette.  That helped out and then we were off to check in my bag.

As I learned last year, Monterey will shut down their security screening if there are no upcoming flights within anMonterey Airport hour or two so Rob and I waited in the lobby for a few minutes waiting for them to open.

We took pics and twittered on our phones and eventually the gates opened.  Rob made sure I was all set up to go through and then with a kiss and a hug he was gone.  Long drawn out goodbyes only cause me to cry so we know we have to make it short and sweet.

By some small miracle my bags weren’t picked for additional screening so I gathered my stuff back up and walked the 20 feet to the gate.  Rob was waiting by the glass to see me walk through so when he saw me he gave me a wave and headed off.

4783_116738856473_662981473_2887326_4591581_nThe 1st leg of the trip was to San Francisco.  It was a prop plane but thankfully the whole flight was only about 20 minutes long.  I really wish I had taken my camera out too because there was a really cool shot in the air of when the clouds met the fog right before the ocean.  It will forever be burned in my memory but of course I didn’t get to get a picture of it.

At the San Fran airport I booked it to the gate for 2nd leg of the trip.  It was to the Dulles airport in DC.  Last year there was hardly anyone on this flight and I was able to lay down on all three seats in my row.  It was really great because it is a five hour overnight flight.  I was kinda hoping for the same thing this trip.  I was already sleepy from all the food I had eaten, not to mention it was around ten at night and already past my bedtime.

All hopes were dashed when they announced that the flight was overbooked and they were looking for volunteers to give up their seats.  The deal they were offering was pretty sweet actually.  They would get you on the next flight in the morning, put you up in a hotel in San Fran with transportation to and from AND you would get a free round trip ticket to anywhere in the US except HI and AK with no black out dates.  If I hadn’t had a connecting flight to catch with a ride waiting for me when I got there I would have seriously considered it.

I had a bad experience on this flight last year so I wasn’t looking forward to this flight.  I had bought a pillow and sleep4783_116769736473_662981473_2888375_8195579_n mask at the airport because I knew the first part of the flight wouldn’t be too bad and I had already seen what movie would be showing and I had no desire to watch DragonBall Z.

The flight was surprisingly smooth.  There was about a 15 minute period where we ran into some turbulence but other than take off and landing, that was the only time the seat belt light was on.  I found a classical music station on the plane radio and was able to get about an hour and a half of sleep in ten minute increments.  I just can’t sleep well sitting up.

4783_116829961473_662981473_2889476_935991_nIn DC I stopped a Five Guys again for a breakfast sandwich and then headed to my gate where I read until they announced our flight.  Once we boarded they warned us that it was raining and very foggy in Portland and they were prepared to reroute us through Vermont if they had to.  Great.

It was another full flight.  I sat next to a very nice girl reading an electricians for dummies book.  I gave her my standard disclaimer that I was a nervous flier and not to mind me and she was fine with that.  Behind me were two chatterboxes that made me remember a pair of earplugs had come with my sleep mask.  🙂

The flight attendants were still milling about when I felt us starting to descend…very quickly.  I know that it was probably just the clouds we were going through that made me think it was going far too fast but that is when the panic started to set it.  Finally the pilot came on and announced we were making our “rather rapid decent” into the Portland airport and hopefully the turbulence wouldn’t “get any worse”.

Yeah, it was pretty bad.  Probably the worst I have ever experienced.  And the worst part was everything outside was a haze of grey cotton candy.  You could see NOTHING else.  I don’t know about you, but when I am flying and the plane starts descending, as soon as I can see the ground I feel better.  Just knowing that it is there and we are getting closer and will be on the ground soon is comforting.

Amid the gauzy outside view the plane was rocking and dipping and being tossed side to side.  One of the flight attendants almost took a dive as he was walking through getting the garbage.   The person sitting next to me is calm as calm can be, but she is on the lookout for the ground for me since she now knows I can’t look out the window for myself without getting more frightened.  There is a couple across the aisle from me where the wife has her head in her hands and he is rubbing her back.  I suddenly miss Rob very much.  “It’s going to be okay, I promise.”  I hear the man say.  I look over expecting to see him comforting his wife but I find he is looking right at me as he says the words.  I realize that I am rocking back and forth trying to breathe.  I smile and just say: “I don’t do flying very well.”  He nods and smiles and says: “Just think of it as a very big roller coaster.”

I grin and say: “I don’t do those either.”   He just laughs and says: “Okay, then just trust me, it will be okay.”

I am grateful people are so nice but embarrassed that I am such an obvious basket case.  🙂

When the treetops are finally visible both my new friends, my seatmate and the guy across look at me and exclaim: “We can see ground!”  Thank goodness for small favors.

The touch down was flawless and as we taxi to the gate we see that it is a torrential downpour outside.  I could care less about getting wet…in fact I would have gotten down on my knees and kissed the ground but I didn’t want everyone to think I was a bigger freak than I already was.  😀

On the ground I make my way to baggage claim while calling my aunt to let her know they can head out to come pick me up.  I text Rob and let him know I landed safe and after a long wait finally get my bag and head out to see my Aunt Lee(auntie tee) and my mom.

After a short drive through the streets of Portland we get to Auntie Tee’s house and move my luggage from that car to mom’s and head into the house where I get to see my cousin Rocky who I haven’t seen in at least ten or thirteen years.  She, my brother and I were all the babies of the cousins so of course I tended to be closer to Rocky than any of my other cousins.  She was Shawn’s age so she was older and I always looked up to her.  She is now living in Virginia, married with two beautiful children that I got to meet that day.

We didn’t stay long as I was running on empty both food and sleepwise and I was in desperate need of a shower.  So4783_116909301473_662981473_2890971_658283_n1 mom drove us home and after dropping me off she headed out to Red Barn to get us a fish and chicken basket with fries and onion rings and a chocolate shake for me.  The Red Barn is a mom and pop place just down the road from my moms house that we have always loved.  How can you go wrong with deep fried everything??

I had planned to go to Walmart to pick up an outfit for Sherry’s wedding and get some essentials that I hadn’t brought with me but as soon as that food hit my belly I was comatose.  I changed into PJ’s and somehow managed to wait until the sheets for my bed were out of the drier before collapsing on my bed and falling into an instant slumber around four in the afternoon eastern time.

I awoke around ten thirty to thunder crackling loudly overhead.  I opened my eyes to find the accompanying lightening flashing as well.  About two minutes later I saw the living room light blink on and new that my mom had woken up as well.

I padded out into the living room and mumbled “gotta pee” before hitting the bathroom and coming back out.  Mom announced that she didn’t want me sleeping in my room while the storm was raging because there were two large trees right outside my room that could fall down and crush me in my bed.  Yikes, thanks mom!

I grabbed my blanket and sleep mask and dragged them out to the recliner where I laid for about fifteen minutes.  I couldn’t really sleep there but thankfully the worst of the storm had passed so after taking full blame for the storm(“I facebooked saying I wanted thundershowers while I was here because we don’t get those back home.”) I headed back to my bed to fall back into my coma until mom woke me this morning at seven or so.

She has to work today so I drove her first to McDonalds for her breakfast and then to work so I could have the car.

My original plan was to make it to walmart while she was working but she has now expressed an interest in going so I will have to wait.   However as I was driving back from her work I found myself wishing I had brought my camera with be because there are some great shots of downtown I would like to get.  So I think I might just take my camera on a little jaunt to see if I can get some good pics.  Plus I have to go to the gym down the street and see if they will sign me up for a weeks worth of membership.  I still have to train for my 10 K but I didn’t anticipate all this rain either.  Hmph.

So here I sit, on my bed with the laptop and cell phone.  I’m blogging, texting Paula and sipping a diet sprite.  Who says I can’t multi task???   I need to shower and come up with some sort of plan for the day, but I want to be lazy.

Okay, that is all for now, I’ll blog as more happens.

Birthday Weekend Trip Report Day One

So last weekend my husband told me he had a trip planned for my birthday weekend and he wanted to surprise me but he also didn’t want me to get my hopes up as if we would be going to Vegas or a theme park or something like that.

A bit of background:  For as long as I have been with Rob we have always gotten these cute little cards every holiday with pictures of a little girl on them.  And when I say EVERY holiday I mean it.  She sent one out for St. Patty’s Day, Valentines Day, Easter, and so on and so on.  They were sent by Rob’s old friend from school Kerry and the little girl featured on the cards was her little girl Bailey.  I had never met them but I pretty much got to watch the little girl grow up in pictures.

We have talked often about taking a trip up to Cayucos to see them since it is only about two hours away but we just never seemed to all get together on it at the right time.

Thus my surprise.  He was taking me to Cayucos for the weekend and I would finally meet Kerry and her family and basically have a stay at a hotel(which he knows I love) and just relax and chill out for the weekend.

We left work at five and headed out to this little beach town.  It’s about 20 mins from San Louis Obisbo and is an easyEntryway to hell? drive up the highway.  About ten miles away from our hotel our GPS told us to turn off onto a very creepy, very curvy road.  One lane with sharp turns and not much in the way of civilization.  As we turned onto the road, Rob turned to me and said: “Remember that movie The Hills Have Eyes?  We aren’t stopping for ANYTHING!”

We managed to make it off that road without having car trouble and then being mangled to death by maniacs and found our hotel with no problem.

We knew when we booked the room that it was going to be a small little motel.  They had a website but the reservations were not available online.  But the price was right and they accepted pets and the first choice of hotels was all booked up due to a wedding so we booked over the phone.

When we arrived what we found was a small motel built off of a house and run by a couple that lived in said housimg_7801e.  He took our info and gave us our keys…and I do mean keys.   He handed us the first set of actual keys to a hotel room that I have seen since I lived in Maine.  No key cards, and actual key with the big tacky plastic key ring announcing your room number on it.  I suddenly was no longer worried about the movie The Hills Have Eyes and was more worried about the movie Vacancy!

We got to our room and discovered that the pictures of the rooms on the internet were kind img_7792of deceiving when it came to the size of the room.  Yeah, the room was TINY!   It had a double bed because…no bigger bed would fit, but the thing that made it img_7794that much smaller were the two white wicker chairs that were on either side of the room.  Without them the room might be okay but as it stands now we are on top of each other and then cramped in the bed.  Oh well.  We knew we had to live with it.

We unpacked what we could and then headed out in search of what was within walking distance of the hotel and possibly for dinner.  What we found was very little but we did find an italian/mexican place that also served burgers.  On our way to the food place we had passed a coffee shop that Rob had researched online.  They were having an open mic night and he wanted to check it out so while I waited for the food he ran up there.

A few minutes later he called me to tell me that he was going to go get his guitar and then hang out for a while.  I told him that was cool and would bring the food back to the motel.

Last night was uneventful.  Rob played for awhile at the coffee shop and then came back.  We ate and puttered around and went to bed.

Day Two to follow soon

Upcoming Travels

So I don’t know if I really blogged about it before other than mentioning it in passing but Paula and I are hitting Vegas this weekend for a little girls weekend of fun.
I got an insanely good deal at the Venetian so I finally get to stay there!  That just puts me over the moon!  I’ve wanted to stay there for so many years and now I finally get to.
We got the cheap flights out of Monterey so we leave on Friday and come home on Sunday.  So it’s going to be another really fast trip but I’m pretty stoked.  You can’t tell that can you?
Tonight I’ll try and see how much clothes I can stuff into the laptop backpack and my big purse.  They charge you 35 bucks to check a bag so I’ll see if I can make due.  Last time I had my own backpack but Rob said the laptop case is quite roomy.  We’ll see.
In other news the fires are still raging near my house.  According to my friend Meegs who is friends with a firefighter out here we shouldn’t be in any danger but it was so creepy this morning.
The smoke was hanging low in the air and as we drove in towards the village the only thing passing us was a long string of fire trucks.
I’m a little worried about leaving for the weekend.  If Rob has to evacuate while I’m gone I’m sure he’ll be fine but I’ll feel pretty helpless.  I think I might put together a box before I leave of things I want him to take in case.
Hmmm.  Good idea.
Not much else going on around my neck of the woods.  Vegas in August is shaping up to be a whirlwind trip of lots of things to do and people to see.  I’m so happy that DD and Alan are coming out to see us!  Our friends Chad and Denise will also be in town for a night.  We haven’t seen them since Glenn’s wedding in 2001 so that will be cool.  Plus of course my mom and we’ll hang out with Marc and Jenna again and finally get to meet Baby Cooper.  He was still in Jenna’s belly last year when we saw them.  🙂
I’m very much looking forward to that trip as well.
In September I’m heading back to Maine for the first time since I think 2002.  I’m looking forward to being there but not getting there.  The flight is divided into three legs and I’m taking the red eye out.  My hope is that I’ll get to sleep during the middle flight since that is like 5 hours.  If I get to sleep on the plane it’s kinda like gaining an extra day.  That has always been my biggest gripe about flying back home.  You lose two days just in traveling.  At any rate the I haven’t traveled for this length of time by myself since I left for AZ in 1999…and if I remember right I was sucking down airline bottles of booze to help ease my fears.  🙂  I don’t think my mom would appreciate coming to pick me up and finding me staggering and reeking of booze.  Heh.  I guess that is what Xanax is for eh?

Of Course I did.

Okay so it’s now less than three weeks away from a quickie girls weekend in Vegas that Paula and I just put together(allegiant air rules!)

It’s going to be awesome, we’re staying in a suite at the Venetian and we have tickets for Thunder from Down Under at the Excalibur(Front row thankyouverymuch).  I just can’t wait!

Well, last night I ordered this arm extender thing for my camera.  It basically makes it so that you can take a picture of you and whoever you are with in front of something without having to ask someone to do it or to look like it’s just your faces in the shot.  This is very exciting to me.  Not just for this upcoming trips but hell, I’m going to carry that thing everywhere!  You know how I am about my camera and taking pictures right?  Now I can actually  be in some of the pictures I take!!

Soooooooooooo….

This afternoon I tarted myself up because I was bored and I thought I would take pictures of a couple of different shirts that I was considering wearing in Vegas…you know cleavage bearing shirts and all that.  I was going to send the pics to Paula to see what she thought(she is much more fashion minded than I).

Can you guess what happened?

Instead of using the tripod that I bought months ago and have never taken out of the box, I propped the camera up on the big screen TV.  I’ve done this many times when I have taken a picture of myself with no problems.

Not today kid!  After a couple of shots, I turned it on it’s side to get a lengthwise view and set the timer.  As I posed I watched the camera tumble to the carpet.  I laughed, picked it up and tried again.

This time the camera just beeped at me.  I picked it up and looked at it.  Wait, the lens isn’t supposed to slant off to the side is it?

Yup, I broke the fucking camera!

I’ll say that one more time:  I BROKE THE FUCKING CAMERA!!!

The thing I use almost daily.  I broke it because I was being vain and taking pictures of myself.  I broke it because I was being lazy and didn’t want to set up the tripod.  I broke it THREE WEEKS before my big girls weekend in Vegas!  I broke it less than 24 hours after ordering a really cool accessory for it!

How stupid do I feel?

I fessed up to Rob and surprisingly he isn’t upset.  He said he was never sold on this camera and he is going to take it as a blessing in disguise.

So today we are going to research cameras online and tomorrow, after Rob is done playing the farmers market in Salinas, we will head over to Best Buy and see about picking up a new one.

But seriously…only me!

EDITED TO ADD:

Oh yeah, and I just broke my temporary crown on my tooth too. Goooo me!

So I left work around 1:30 on Friday–my birthday–and Rob and I headed out to the Monterey Airport for the maiden voyage of Allegiant Airlines new flight from there directly to Vegas.

There had been all sorts of promotions on the radio and in the paper on this launch since they were offering the first flights at 49 bucks each way.  Rob and I looked into it and decided that it was about time we had a quick weekend trip to Vegas again.

When we lived in AZ it was only a five hour drive so we did it quite often.  Since we moved the only times we get out to gamble is one week in August for our anniversary.  We booked this flight because it fell on my birthday, I didn’t realize at the time that this would be the first run on this particular flight path until Rob brought it up to me.

When we got to the airport there was a healthy line for such a tiny airport but more importantly, there was Elvis.  Yes, Elvis and his little showgirl friend were there to launch the 1st flight every from Monterey to Vegas.  It was kinda funny all the people wanting to have their picture taken with him knowing they were about to fly into a town with a million other Elvy around.

When we finally made it through security and got to go board the plane, we were handed “goody bags” as we exited the building.  They consisted of a deck of cards, Elvis style sunglasses, a flashing vegas sign magnet, a Vegas collectible spoon and a couple of other cute little vegas things.

As we made our way to our seats I noticed that ever empty seat had a plastic champagne glass sitting in it.  Yup, we got some free bubbly while in flight served by Elvis and the showgirl.  I found this very amusing because before I left on Friday my office-mate Misty  was singing to me that I was going on a plane and they were going to give me free champagne because it was my birthday, just joking around.  Heh!

The other perk the airline gave us was at the end of the flight, everyone aboard got vouchers for Blue Man Group tickets Saturday night!  I love this airline!

The flight got quite bumpy as we made our decent and I had a bit of a panic attack but soon we were on the ground and meeting Renee by the shuttle bus.

Due to the location of our hotel we were the last ones to be dropped off but that was fine.

Check in at the El Cortez was a breeze and our room was surprisingly large.  We quickly headed downstairs to get our players cards and take pictures for a keychain that was offered in the fun book they gave us.  After that it was off to Walgreens to pick up some snacks and drinks and things we would need for the weekend that we didn’t pack.

We relaxed in the room for awhile after we got back and then headed down to gamble.  Renee was running on about two hours sleep from the night before and after a couple of cocktails was feeling the effects of both.  We found Rob and decided to go across the street to Mamacita’s Mexican place where we ordered a ton of food and sobered up while waiting for it.

Back in the room we changed into our jammies and ate.  We all agreed that we might go back downstairs for a little black jack in a little bit.  We weren’t really ready to go to bed yet.

Renee laid down for a 15 minute power nap and told us to wake her up when we wanted to go downstairs.  A half an hour later my attempt to wake her was greeted with an unenthusiastic “mnnhmmphhh.”  I asked her if she wanted to stay and sleep and she said yes so Rob and I left her in dreamland.

Downstairs Rob and I lost money at an alarmingly rapid rate at the first black jack table we came to so we decided that table games were done for the trip. Feeling kind of defeated, we sat at the bar and played some quarter video black jack for awhile and then decided we’d had it and came back upstairs and went to bed.

Saturday morning we woke up ungodly early, showered and got ready.  We trotted on down to Neonopolis to the theater and got our tickets to see our girls in the Sex and The City movie.

As we were buying our tickets, the token gay SATC male fan came up to us.  He was wearing tight white jeans, a white tank top and a white newsboy cap.  He took one look at us and said:  “You girls going to see Carrie?”  He was adorable and if I lived here I would have totally exchanged numbers and become friends.  We said of course and we discussed the benefits of seeing it at ten in the morning as opposed to the chaos that must have been the Friday premiere.

He was right because it turned out there were only five of us in the whole theater once the movie started.

It was, of course, wonderful.  It started out a little slow for me.  I think it was because they have to give a sort of preamble to those who have never seen the shows.  Kind of like the beginning of the Stephanie Plum novel.  It has to be explained for those that aren’t familiar with the past plot lines.  But I already know this part, skip to the good stuff would ya??

It got better and I think I teared up at least five times.  Had I been watching in the the privacy of my own home I probably would have been flat out bawling but alas I had to hold it in.

The bad thing about the movie is now there is nothing to look forward to.  They have covered everything they need to cover and there won’t be another movie.  Nor would I really think I would want one because it would just have to rehash everything this one did in order to be half as interesting, but…it’s so final.  The girls are retired.  Don’t get me wrong, I was looking forward to this movie and am so happy it was made.  It’s just kinda like, I didn’t want it to end.

At any rate we left the movies and hit Walgreens for more soda for Rob and came back to the hotel.

We went downstairs and gambled a bit but I just wasn’t feeling it.  I had some luck on a wheel of fortune machine but I was just too tired.  I left Rob and Renee to play and came up to the room to lie down.  I didn’t sleep but it was nice to  lay down for a while.

Soon it was time to get ready and go to our complimentary tickets to Blue Man Group.  I have seen the show twice before when it was at the Luxor, but it’s a phenomenal show. Renee had never seen it and the price was right.  We had the front desk call a cab and then headed down.

I knew it would be a bad cab ride when the driver picked us up and promptly backed into a metal post, messing up the back end of his cab and just kept driving.  He took the freeway, drove at a crazy speed and changed lanes often without using his turn signals.

Thankfully we made it to the Venetian safely and got our tickets to the show.

We had an hour to kill so we stopped at an Asian place to eat dinner.  We had tons of leftovers but no place to store them during the show so we had to waste the food.

After dinner we stopped at a slot machine so we could smoke.  I put five dollars in a nickel machine and promptly won 78 dollars.  When I say promptly, I mean the first turn of the reels!  I couldn’t believe it but I cashed out right away!

The show was awesome of course.  If you’ve never seen it, it can’t be described so I’ll spare you the trying.  It’s just a kick ass show.  I was glad to see there were some new bits that had been added since the first two shows that I had seen.  Oh, and our seats were fabulous.  We were so freaking close it wasn’t funny.  Did I mention I love Allegiant Air?

The cab ride home was less scary and cheaper so I tipped the guy more.

Back at the hotel Renee caught another power nap but actually woke up this time to head back downtown with us this time.  She said she wanted to see the enchanted forest at Fitzgeralds so we took her to where it used to be years and years ago.  Alas, now it is just a bunch of slot machines.  No room for fun stuff when they can be making money! After that we found one of those giant Wheel of Fortune machines that you sit around.  If you’ve never seen them it’s a huge wheel that is covered in domed glass and chairs are put around several “stations” where the slot machines are.  If you hit a bonus, the giant wheel will spin and show you how much you won.  I really like these machines, I’ve only seen them once before at the Venetian and am really pleased they are downtown now.

We played a 20 but cashed out at  ten when Renee lost her money.

For a little while no one really seemed to know where they wanted to go or what they wanted to do so we just milled around under the FMS canopy until the last show of the night started.  We watched it as I taped it with my camera, but it wasn’t very good.

After we spotted another wheel of fortune machine in the Fremont so we plunked down and put a 20 in.  I got a couple of crap bonuses until I finally got the 5000 credit bonus putting my 20 up to 70 something.  We of course cashed out and then Renee said we should go to Four Queens and get a drink.  So we put some money in some video poker machines at the bar and got comped a bunch of drinks.

At that point we were tired and somewhat drunk so we headed to the Chicago Brewpub and got some grub to bring back to the room.  We got White Garlic Pizza, Cheese Knots, and hot wings and headed up to the room where we ate and fell asleep while watching that movie about the puppets from the south park guys.

All too soon we had to wake up and get ready to leave.  We all showered, dressed and packed up.  Rob went downstairs to play some roulette for a co-worker and Renee and I finished up our packing.  We all met up downstairs and eventually caught the shuttle back to the airport after Renee put five in a machine and cashed out with 35.00!

When we got to the airport we bid Renee goodbye and headed off to our separate gates.  After we got through the security checkpoint we stopped at a bank of chairs to put our shoes back on.  It was then when Rob discovered his boarding pass and ID were missing.  We searched and searched all our carry on luggage but it was no use.  They were gone.  The only thing that Rob could think of was that he set them down in one of those buckets while taking the laptop out and putting it back in it’s case but when he asked lost and found they hadn’t seen anything.

So we ended up going to the gate and the very nice people there told us that if we couldn’t find it they would probably be able to have TSA approve another boarding pass with my ID and last name and his credit cards as identification.

With that knowledge he headed back to the lost and found while I got a mini pizza from the pizza hut express.  About ten minutes later he texted me that they had found it and he was coming back to the gate.  Phew!!!  What a relief!

The contrast from the flight to Vegas and from Vegas was stereotypically funny.  On the Friday flight to Vegas everyone was whooping it up, getting drunk on free champagne and being loud.  On the way home on Sunday everyone was very subdued and hungover.  Everyone had sunglasses on and was sleeping on the flight.  Heh.

Great trip, great memories.

Reno Trip Report

Friday I left work at two and Rob drove me to San Jose to catch my flight. I got there way too early only to find that the flight ahead of mine at the gate was seriously delayed. As a result ours was delayed about fifteen or twenty minutes but it really wasn’t that bad.
The flight was full and we were told by the pilot that the weather in Reno was windy so the flight was going to be quite bumpy.  I did the best I could not to grab the leg of the guy sitting next to me every time the plane bounced around and managed quite well.  Goooo me!
It was a thankfully short flight and we touched down only a little bit late. I got my suitcase from baggage claim and called Renee’s cell. She gave me her location and I went out to meet her and James to drive us over to our glamorous Day’s Inn Hotel off of the freeway.

We got up to the rooms and had a couple of drinks in my room. Renee got a call from her friend Ed so we just chilled and I got online while they talked to him. After they hung up, we played with Renee’s new hot pink camera for a bit before calling a cab to Circus Circus as the front desk told us that was the closest casino.
I’m pretty sure the cab driver ripped me off five bucks but I can’t be sure and I was too excited to care at the time.
Into Circus Circus, we hit the ATM for James and Renee and then settled in at some nickel and penny machines.  After donating some money to the Reno economy there we headed upstairs, over to the Silver Legacy. James said he wanted to find a bar(not a club) so we headed to the El Dorado casino and settled in at a bar on some video poker machines.
Several drinks later, Renee’ was getting tipsy and bored so we went in search of machines. I’m pretty sure we were still at the El Dorado at this point. Renee started to get really sleepy so we decided to call it a night and caught a cab over to the Denny’s across the street from our hotel. James and I ordered the chicken fried steak with onion rings while Renee’ opted for buffalo wings and salad.
Up to my room we divided up the food and then Renee’ and James headed back to their room to eat and go to bed.

It was late but I checked to see if Rob was online anyway, he wasn’t so I uploaded the pictures I had taken that day and night and made a little video but for some reason youtube wasn’t letting me upload it. I discovered later it was the hotel internet, it wouldn’t let me upload anything anywhere. A serious bummer for someone like me that likes to blog every day with pictures and video while on a trip.
So I made a video of the fact that I was unable to update and went to bed.

On our second and final full day in Reno I woke up around ten and got online to talk to Rob. We chatted for awhile and I told him how the night had gone. After about fifteen minutes I dragged my tired ass into the shower and got dressed. A few minutes later Renee’ called and asked if I wanted anything from Starbucks. I said sure and she came over. She said James was still trying to wake up and she was hoping the coffee would help. I brushed my hair and we hopped in her car.
The directions the front desk gave her were a little off but we managed to find it after a detour.

Back at the hotel we went our separate ways and I talked to Rob some more on the computer. I made him put Pappy on the webcam so I could get get my puppy fix and then James and Renee’ eventually came back over. We called a cab and headed over to Circus Circus to hit the midway. That was my only request of the trip and Renee’ wanted to as well.
We played a lot of games, won some little stuffed animals, and saw some high fliers.

After about an hour we had gotten our fill of screaming children and headed upstairs to find something to eat.
We settled on a snack bar/pizza/deli kinda place and I wasn’t that hungry but when I spied a corndog on the menu I decided I needed to.
We ordered, reviewed our stash of prizes and ate. When we were done we hit some more slots at the Silver Legacy. I told them my plan of leaving at 7:30 to go back to the hotel. I had a flight to catch at 8:40 in the morning and I knew if I stayed out drinking and gambling all night there was no way I would make it. Renee’ seemed disappointed but she understood.
She asked me if there was anything fun other than gambling that I wanted to do before I left and I mentioned the artist I had seen on the way to the El Dorado. I thought it would be cool to get our caricatures done. So we headed over there and discovered the artist wouldn’t be back until six thirty so we found a gift shop to get souvenirs for my bitches back home.
After that we dicked around and played some more penny slots but I was losing feeling for it. I was tired and kinda bored with the games already. I was of course loving the company and the laughter but didn’t want to waste any more money on the machines.
At six thirty we headed up to the artist place and waited for him. When he arrived we asked him to do the three of us without a theme and he said no problem.
He started with me and then James and finally Renee’. It was so fun and amazing to watch him turn all these different random shapes into a face.
We drew quite a crowd and got a good laugh from them when the artist drew Renee’s cleavage. Heh!

When we were done I felt happy and wanted to leave it on a good note. It was seven fifteen and I told them I was heading back to the hotel. We hugged and I caught a cab to the Days Inn where I ordered some Chinese delivery and tried to contact Rob on MSN video chat. When the camera came up it was actually Marc sitting in front of the camera. That was kinda funny. So since Marc was over Rob didn’t have the time to chat with his wife that was away so I uploaded my pictures and videos while keeping the webcam on so I could hear them talking(they were good boys and didn’t say anything bad. heh.). My Chinese food arrived so I snacked on that while I worked on my youtube videos until Marc left and it was okay for my husband to talk to me again.
We chatted until ten I think and then Rob warned me if I didn’t get to bed I would be very tired in the morning.
I packed up what I could and then fell asleep watching a random movie on the FX channel.
I had put in for a wake up call but ended up waking up about a half an hour before.
I showered, dressed and packed the rest of my stuff before calling and waking Renee'(who hadn’t gotten in until two or three that morning) and going over to their room to drop off her stuffed animals and hug them goodbye.
On my way out of my hotel room I noticed it was snowing. Fairly lightly and not sticking to the ground but it was snowing. I hadn’t seen snow in at least six years and it was weird how familiar it felt walking outside to the registration office. Like I had just been in it last winter. Weird…but nice.
I checked out and called a cab. Fifteen minutes later I was at the airport and facing a massive line to check in. I was already running late(shocker!) but it didn’t take that long to get checked in(I was already checked in online but I had to print a boarding pass and check a bag). Once that was done I headed to security and found a line about three times as long as check in. That took quite a while but thankfully I wasn’t stopped for extra screening and made it to the gate to find everyone already in line.
I needn’t have panicked because apparently the plane wasn’t even there yet and was delayed due to the weather.
When all was said and done and we were on the plane and the plane was de-iced we were in the air about a half an hour or so late. The flight was really bumpy and I didn’t like the fact that we were in a fog of clouds the entire time but we did manage to land safely and although the bags were delayed I didn’t care because I was safe on the ground and ready to go home.
I called Rob when I had my bag and waited out in the rain under a canopy for him to pick me up.
Safe in the PT we cruised on our way home. We stopped in Morgon Hill for groceries and then made a bee line for our house.
I was so happy to see my dogs and cuddled Pappy for a good ten minutes on the couch while Rob brought the groceries in.
I was home by one o’clock and spent the rest of the day getting my videos ready and uploaded to youtube since the stupid Days Inn internet never let me all weekend.
I had a lot of fun. It was a very short trip but very relaxed and fun. I’ve really missed those two so it was really nice to spend time with them no matter how short the time was.
I really think it is something we should do every four months or so just to blow off steam and reconnect but I doubt my finances will allow it.
One thing for sure is next time it will NOT be in winter. I guess poor Renee’ and James got stuck in the snowstorm on the drive home and a three hour trip turned into a whole lot longer.
Speaking of bad weather, I woke up this morning to find that we had no phone line. No phone line means no DSL…No internet…OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! NO INTERNET???? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? YOU BETTER BE JOKING!!!
But of course he(Rob) wasn’t.
I called the phone company when I got to work and they said that it sounded like a power surge. So when we get home we have to unplug everything from everywhere and wait five minutes then replug everything in and try again. If it doesn’t work we’ll have to go outside to get cell coverage to call the phone company back again to try another approach.
So this entry might not even go up for another day or so and I think I will cry if I am without internet for that long…
Wish me luck!!

16 Days

It’s not like me to just pick up and go, but in 16 days, I’ll be moving to California.

The reasons behind the move are simple.  Rob hates his job.  He had already given his notice before we even decided to move to Cali.  Last month when we visited Rob’s parents to attend his 20 year high school reunion he voiced this to his parents.  They asked if he would think about relocating, he said sure.  They said would you want to rent out G’pa’s cabin and that was all she wrote.  We are packing up the PT and hitting the road on August 1st.

We listed our house on Friday and on Monday night we accepted a bid that was 10,000 dollars higher than what we listed at.  We will close on the 28th.  The movers are coming on the 26th to get all our crap and move it.  My last day is the 29th so we are going to camp out in a dog friendly hotel for two days before we head out.  Works for me since there is a swimming pool.

Rob’s last day is this Friday.  The girls that he works with are being total bitches about it too.  Really mature stuff like just ignoring him.  You would think that after working together for 12 years his boss would be able to rise above it and be happy for him but no.  I can’t wait til he’s done with that place!!

We managed to pack up our whole house over the three day weekend.  We gave away our couch and most of our furniture.  Our living room has one recliner that we will leave behind, my laptop stand and the big screen TV.  That’s it.

The hallway and front room are filled with boxes.  It’s very weird being at my house right now.

Weekend at Ak-Chin

We just got back from Harrah’s Ak-Chin casino resort.  We got there once and a while when the price is right.  It’s only about a half an hour away from house and it quells our Vegas urges for a little bit.  When we called to reserve our room we requested a smoking room but we were told the only smoking rooms they had available were two queen beds.  Being the die-hard smokers that we are we accepted it. When we got to the property and were checking in, the lovely desk clerk told us that she could upgrade us to a non-smoking pool side  king room and we could smoke on the patio.  Sounded okay with us.  We have a queen bed at home so anytime we can sleep on a king in a hotel we prefer it.  When we got to the room it was much bigger than the rooms we have had the last two times we visited.  How funny is it that I never get upgraded in Vegas but I do at the Indian casino?

It was a nice little break.  Rob has been extremely busy at his work as they are starting up the summer courses and he has limited time to get everything done.  He really needed this.

The thing we discovered about the Indian casinos around here is that the slots don’t loosen up until around one or two in the morning. That is also when people finally leave so you can actually find a spot to play.  Since we got there around nine or so, we putted around the room for awhile just to kill time. We had rented some DVD’s for the portable DVD player so we watched “The Others”.  Neither of us had seen it.  Rob was of course critical of some of the inconsistencies of the movie but overall we really liked it.  I had heard it had a surprise ending, and when you hear something like that you of course watch extra close and think you know what it’s going to be.  It wasn’t what we thought at all.  I won’t say anymore about it in case you haven’t seen it before, but it’s definitely worth renting.

By the time the movie was done it was time to go down to the casino. We didn’t win, but we had fun.

Saturday was spent watching TV and using the TV internet system.  Which was a joke.  The tagline on it said: “surf the net at WARP SPEED!” It was more like warped speed. It was just very lame.  There is a reason webtv never caught on.

We discovered our room upgrade wasn’t as great as we thought.  Our room was great, but we didn’t get as good of a room as the people above us.  Apparently they got the room with the trampoline, or at least that is how it sounded. We woke up to it in the afternoon and it went on for hours.

We intended to go to bed fairly early on Saturday night but the Black Jack machines were calling Rob’s name.  He didn’t end up coming back until around two in the morning.  Needless to say, it was very difficult for us to wake up this morning for check out.  As a result when we got back to the house(after giving the dog some much needed affection) we took an hour and a half long nap.

So here I sit, waiting for the WWE pay per view with the dog at my feet just waiting for me to drop one of my Bugles.

We didn’t do much gambling this weekend but it was nice just to sit in the hotel room, get room service, swim in their gorgeous pool, watch DVD’s(we also rented Rosemary’s Baby and Hedwig and the Angry Inch but haven’t finished watching them), and just basically be out of the house but still be lazy.

It was a nice weekend but as usual I am glad to be home to my own bed and my loving(if disturbed) doggie.
